If you have a craft room and you know how difficult it can be to keep it organized and looking semi-tidy you are going to love these tips and ideas to keep your craft room organized.
There is nothing worse than looking for something in a craft room, not only can it start to look messy quickly it also highlights things you want to tackle, so you become reluctant to put it away in case you forget about it again.
You might be wondering who I am, I’m Sharon and I own How To Get Organized At Home. I help busy women clean and organize their homes and lives, I’m also a Qualified Organizational Specialist. Lisa has kindly allowed me to help you organize your craft rooms.
Organizing Your Craft Room
When it comes to organizing craft supplies it’s not as easy as many people think.
There are often a lot of pieces that need storing, you might not need them every day, but you still need to access these items and how they are stored is so important.
No craft room is ever laid out the same, so it’s about finding the right supplies for you to meet your needs and to make your crafting room look amazing and practical.
Don’t Become Paralyzed At The Thought Of Organizing
You need to organize your craft room in a way that it allows you to be creative and not feel paralyzed by how the room feels.
Being organized and being tidy are two separate concepts I need to address, tidy doesn’t mean you will find items you are looking for, being organized does.
You can throw everything together in a big box and not see any of it, and that could make the room look tidy, but will you find anything you want quickly? Probably not.
Working out what you have in your craft room and how to organize it so you can use it and find it is what you are ultimately looking for.
Keeping The Space Organized
How do you keep it organized once you have sorted it? This is going to be something you must work on every time you are doing any crafting.
What is acceptable to you and your family and what isn’t.
You need to work out:
- How much you can leave out
- When you next plan to tackle the project
- Is everything that can be put away safely (somethings do need to cool down before putting away) back in their home?
Know Your Reasons
You need to have a reason for keeping it looking good, often this will help to keep you motivated for the long-haul, sometimes it’s just a reminder why an organized craft room works.
Some examples of reasons:
- I deserve an organized craft room
- My family needs to use this space too
- I don’t want to be embarrassed by my craft room
- I want my craft room to be functional
You have to find your own reasoning that helps you move forward and not backwards.
Storage Is The Key To Organization
Thinking about your storage options that you have and the items you must store, sometimes you do need to get creative.
One of the most unused spaces for storage is the back of the door.
While you don’t want a lot of clutter hanging from the back of the door, thinking through how you could utilize this space better could help you with some of the smaller crafting items.
Look Up With Storage Solutions
Shelving is a great option for helping organize a craft space, but you must think about how you store and organize items on the shelving.
Shelving can quickly become an organized mess, so you need to think about storage options on shelving. Magazine holders work well for paper and card supplies.
Plastic containers are perfect for separating out crafting items and keeping them safe.
You can even buy plastic drawers; these can be great for so many different items in your craft room.
Label, Label And Label
What you must do is label, there is little point organizing your craft room if you don’t label.
Not only will this help to keep things organized you will also know where things belong, and this makes it easier putting things away when you’ve finished with them.
You can make labeling as pretty or as plain as you like, it needs to suit your needs and that of your room. Some people like to see the labels, other people don’t.
It’s about finding the right balance for you and your family.
Peg Boards Are Perfect
With crafting there are a lot of tools and accessories that you need and storing these can be difficult.
I recommend pegboards; they are versatile and easy to use for different shaped items. Not only does it keep things tidy but they are also visible so you can grab them easier.
Measure Before You Buy
Before randomly buying different storage options you need to work out the sizes and the items that will be stored there.
This will save you a lot of time and frustration buying the wrong shape or size. Not only will it dampen the desire to get organized it will also waste precious time and potentially money if you don’t return the item.
Measuring the space and the size of the items to go into a storage space is key to getting the right supplies first time.
Ribbon And Tape Organization
One tip for organizing ribbon or tape is to slip them onto a rod and hang them, not only does it keep them tidy it also means they are easy to access and use.
Let’s Recap…
You must find the right reason for organizing your craft room, if you can’t bring yourself to understand why this room is disorganized it becomes more of a challenge to keep it organized and tidy.
Measure before you buy any storage options as this will save money and time when you organize your supplies.
Labeling is important as it will hold the space for the right item, and it means you have somewhere to return it to when you’ve finished using it.
Make the room useable for yourself and your family, crafting is fun so enjoy your organized craft room.
