When you first start learning how to cast on stitches for a knitting project, the thought can seem to be very arduous.
The thumb cast-on, also known as the backward loop cast-on is a very beginner-friendly method.
First, I recommend using a size 8 knitting needle while you are learning and a larger sized yarn such as worsted weight.
Worsted weight yarn is a very beginner-friendly yarn weight to get started with. By using a worsted weight yarn, it will be easier to see the stitches you make than with a thinner weight. I will explain yarn weights in a future post.
Now that you have made a slip stitch you need to cast on stitches to get started on your project. *Try to make your stitches without pulling too tightly on them.*
1. Create a slip stitch.
2. Slip the yarn around your thumb to form a loop.
3. Slip your knitting needle into the loop and pull your thumb out.
4. Repeat this process for the number of stitches you need to cast on.
Casting on stitches using the backward loop or thumb method is an easy process to learn. Using a larger size yarn and needles will make it easier for you to see the stitches. Try not to pull too tightly on the stitches or they will be hard to knit.
