To begin a knitting project make a slip stitch to stop the cast on stitches from unraveling. You will usually count the slip stitch as the first stitch of your cast-on process. If your pattern calls for 10 stitches, count your slip stitch as stitch number one and cast on 9 more.

1. Make a loop.
2. Next, pull another loop through the first loop.
3. Lastly, tighten up the stitch.
You are now ready to cast on your stitches.
